2018 NFL Mock Draft 1.0

Hello MackMillBlog readers! Welcome back to our blog! It has been a very busy year for Tom and I, and as a result, we have not been very active on this site. But, as always, we start to dive in when draft season approaches. Thus, this is my first mock draft of the year. With the season coming to a close last week, the Browns again have the top pick in the draft. It seems that the Browns are without a doubt going to select a QB, but we never know with that organization. They should have several options, with the familiar names of Josh Rosen, Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield, Lamar Jackson, and Josh Allen all likely to be available. This draft looks like it has several players with star potential and we are excited to begin mock draft season. This is my first mock draft, so things are likely to change. Picks 20-32 are randomized, and will be finalized after the Super Bowl. Let’s begin!

Breakdown of the Top 10:

1.) CLEVELAND BROWNS – Sam Darnold, QB, USC

If Darnold declares for the draft, it is likely going to be him or Josh Rosen selected at number one. Both are similar quarterbacks, but I am going to give Darnold the slight edge. The Browns need a quarterback desperately so expect this pick to be one of these players.

2.) NEW YORK GIANTS – Josh Rosen, QB, UCLA

Eli Manning is practically done in New York after the Giants fell off the map in 2017. They will be looking for a fresh start at quarterback, and Josh Rosen has the tools to help them get back on track.

3.) INDIANAPOLIS COLTS – Orlando Brown, OT, Oklahoma

Saquon Barkley may be tempting here, but the Colts may move forward with Marlon Mack or select a running back later in the draft. New GM Chris Ballard wants to protect Andrew Luck, so picking the best tackle prospect early will do just that.

4.) CLEVELAND BROWNS (from HOU) – Saquon Barkley, RB, Penn State

After filling the need at quarterback, the Browns can now select the best player in the draft. Saquon Barkley has the potential to be the best running back in the NFL.

5.) DENVER BRONCOS – Baker Mayfield, QB, Oklahoma

Baker Mayfield is a very interesting prospect. He could go as high as the top 5, or fall back to day 2 of the draft. I think with the Broncos need at the position, he could go this high to them. He has the swagger and confidence that the Bronco locker room with benefit greatly from.

6.) NEW YORK JETS – Lamar Jackson, QB, Louisville

Lamar Jackson is yet another interesting player. He has great arm strength and speed, but his size and accuracy are question marks. I think a team will pull the trigger on him early, and that team could be the Jets at 6.

7.) TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS  – Bradley Chubb, DE, NC State

Chubb very well could be the top prospect in the 2018 NFL Draft. If that is the case, this would be an absolute steal at 7. Chubb is a monster pass rusher that fills a need for the Bucs.

8.) CHICAGO BEARS – Quenton Nelson, OG, Notre Dame

The Bears appear to have their guy at quarterback in Mitchell Trubisky, so protecting him should be their next route. Nelson is a very good player that will help the Bears the day he arrives in Chicago.

9.) SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS – Minkah Fitzpatrick, CB, Alabama

After a strong finish in 2017, the 49ers are all the way back at 9 or 10, depending on a coin flip with the Raiders. Regardless of their selection, I think they will be looking for a defensive back. Minkah Fitzpatrick has been a beast for Nick Saban at Alabama, so John Lynch makes this an easy pick.

10.) OAKLAND RAIDERS – Roquan Smith, ILB, Georgia

Smith had a monster season in 2017, helping Georgia reach the national championship. He should be the top linebacker prospect, which happens to be a need for Oakland. I find it unlikely that the Raiders pass up on Smith if he falls to 9 or 10.
