2017 Salary Cap Analysis

Here is my source for everything cap related for the upcoming year.

The NFL has set the cap at 167,000,000 for the 2017 league year.

Jason at overthecap.com does amazing work relating to the salary cap every year. He complies all the data from contracts and works effortlessly to bring you exact numbers.

Here is Jason’s twitter.

Here is highlights of the franchise tag numbers, tender numbers, franchised players (and their cap hits), along with some other cap related information. Enjoy!

This link takes you to OTC and has an interactive table from year to year of every team’s cap, allotted cap number, number of players under contract, dead money, and cap space.

The franchise tag numbers are set and here they are from Gil Brandt:

Arizona Cardinals: Chandler Jones, LB

Carolina Panthers: Kawaan Short, DT

Los Angeles Chargers: Melvin Ingram, LB

Los Angeles Rams: Trumaine Johnson, CB

New York Giants: Jason Pierre-Paul, DE

Pittsburg Steelers: Le’Veon Bell, RB

Washington Redskins: Kirk Cousins, QB

How these numbers are determined:

The exclusive franchise tag is the average of the top 5 salaries of the position, whereas the non-exclusive is the top 5 cap hits at the position. Both are either that average number or 120% of their previous salary, as is the case with Trumaine Johnson and Kirk Cousins for getting tagged last year and this year.

Exclusive Franchise Tag/Non-Exclusive Franchise Tag

Exclusive tag gives only the team can have negotiating contact with the player. The non-exclusive tag gives other teams to negotiate. Most of these are known to the public however some do not surface (Anthony Spencer). JPP was given the non-exclusive tender meaning other teams can negotiate with him and his agent.

There are a few reasons the Giants would do this instead of having the negotiating rights. They could be gaging what hit market is roughly. He missed some games and is still dealing with adapting to his injured hand. This could help set their own negotiations. They could be willing to depart from JPP. It would cost a team two first round picks to sign JPP away from the Giants. The Giants already have a massive amount of money in last years free agent Vernon Oliver. This will be interesting to see how it shakes out especially if a team that feels they are a “War Daddy” away from a Super Bowl ie Dallas step in.

Tender Offers

There are 1st round, 2nd round, and Original Round tender offers for restricted free agents. First round clocks in this year at 3.91million, second is 2.746 million, and original is 1.797 million. Teams would have to give up the designated round draft pick to sign this player or a trade could be arranged between the two teams.

Notable Restrictive Free Agents:

QB: David Fales RB: Isiah Crowell, Chris Thompson, Mike Gillisee, Terrance West WR: Adam Thielen, Taylor Gabriel, Charles Johnson TE: Trey Burton, Darren Fells OT: Ty Nsekhe, OG: Andrew Norwell C: Matt Paradis, Ryan Groy DE: Jacquies Smith ILB: Korey Toomer, Todd Davis CB: Malcom Butler, Deshawn Shead, Marcus Williams S: Ricardo Allen
